Welcome to the website of the composer, pianist, and teacher Brian Buch. 

Brian Buch received his Doctorate in Music Composition from Boston University and his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition with an emphasis in Piano Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Brian is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of music and privately teaches composition and classical and jazz piano. As a composer, Brian writes for all genres of classical music from orchestral to chamber and solo instruments. His principal composition teacher and mentor is Alla Cohen (New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music), with whom he keeps a close personal connection serving as his main source of inspiration. He has also studied composition with Don Freund, P.Q. Phan, Sven-David Sandström, at IU, with Nancy de Van Vate in Vienna, Austria, and Sam Headrick and Richard Cornell at BU. Brian’s works have been performed in the US, Canada, and Europe.

As a pianist, Brian performs classical and jazz music throughout the Boston area and in Nantucket during the summer. He is active in premiering new works both as a soloist and participant in chamber ensembles. Brian frequently conducts and works with groups focused on contemporary music.

Many of Brian’s compositions have received national and international recognition, including two second place prizes (2005 and 2006) and a first prize (2007) from the MTNA Young Artist Composition Competitions, Honorable Mentions from the International Robert Helps Composition Competitions (2005 and 2006) and Second International Lepo Sumera Composition Competition in Tallinn, Estonia (2006), a finalist prize in the 2007 Queen Elisabeth Composition Competition in Brussels (in which Brian was selected as the only finalist from the western hemisphere), a finalist in the 4th International Haifa Composers Composition Competition in Haifa, Israel, a recipient of the 2009/2010 Wainwright Prize, and a winner of the Boston University Soloists Composition Competition in 2008.  His music is broadcast daily on Italy’s Radio Taukay online radio for contemporary music.
